How to Type Sinhala in Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word works best with Sinhala Unicode text. Unicode keeps letters searchable, copyable, and compatible across modern computers; a visual Sinhala font changes appearance without changing the underlying text.
1. Create Sinhala Unicode text
Open the MyFonts.lk converter and type the sentence phonetically with an English keyboard. Copy the Sinhala Unicode result, not the Legacy result. Unicode is the right choice for new Word documents, email attachments, websites, and searchable PDFs.
2. Paste and choose a font
Paste into Word with Keep Text Only if copied formatting is unwanted. Select the paragraph and choose a Unicode-compatible Sinhala font. The font changes shape and weight, while the Unicode characters remain intact. Use paragraph direction and alignment controls normally; Sinhala is written left to right.
3. Save and share safely
Save as DOCX and embed fonts only when the recipient may not have your chosen font and its licence permits embedding. Export a PDF when layout must remain exact. Before sharing, copy a sentence from the saved file into a plain-text editor: readable Sinhala confirms the document still contains Unicode text.
Common problems
Boxes or missing glyphs mean the selected font lacks Sinhala characters. Garbled Latin-looking text usually means Legacy output was used with the wrong font. Switch back to Unicode output for new work instead of repairing the appearance one character at a time.
